Why we garden? There's no simple answer.
I've been asking this question from so many neighbors, friends and garden club members as long as I can remember, and the answers are as varied as the individuals asked.
"It's our deep roots to nature", proclaims one popular writer, while so may others quote "therapy", "physical exercise", and among other motivations, "aesthetic pursuits". All of the above works for me, but at the top of my list, is my need to surround myself with color.

Adding interest... in color, shapes and organic elements.
Inevitably when we start to plan our gardens, most of us begin to imagine the plants we want to start with. We have grand ambitions to fill our spaces with blossoms left right and center. We rush out and buy whatever takes our fancy. (Heads up - our first mistake)
I say, give it a break, start by making a very rough sketch of your available space and, if you're starting out (or not), divide the space into smaller sections while attempting to learn more about the soil types, the best sunny areas, length of sun exposure, the deep or light shade areas, and even those spaces where you feel more at home than in other parts of your garden.
If you're spending more time in your home office or kitchen, gazing out looking for inspiration, make those views your first gardening targets.
You'll thank me later.
Where to start, you ask?

Natural slopes, rocks, trees and bushes.
